There are many kinds of herbs used for relieving cough and resolving phlegm, such as Chuan Beimu, Aster, and Short Earth Tea.
1. Chuan Beimu: Bitter, sweet flavor, slightly cold in nature. It belongs to lung and heart meridians. It has the effects of clearing heat and moistening the lungs, resolving phlegm and relieving cough, dispersing lumps and subduing swelling. It is used in the treatment of yin deficiency cough, lung-heat dry cough, dry cough with little phlegm, scrofula (equivalent to cervical lymphatic tuberculosis), carbuncle (equivalent to mastitis), carbuncle (equivalent to lung abscess) and other conditions. The drug cannot be used with Chuanwu, Caowu, and Pseudostemma.
2. Aster: Bitter and pungent in flavor, slightly warm in nature. It belongs to the lung meridian. It has the effects of moistening the lungs and lowering the qi (moisturizing the lungs and making the upwardly reversing lung qi descend), resolving phlegm and relieving cough. Used in the treatment of phlegm cough, cough, cough with blood and other conditions.
3. Dwarf Earth Tea: Bitter, pungent flavor, flat nature. Attributed to the lung, liver meridian. It has the effect of resolving phlegm and cough, clearing dampness and heat, activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis. It is used in the treatment of new and prolonged cough, wheezing (shortness of breath) and phlegm, damp-heat jaundice, blood stasis and menstruation (menstruation stoppage due to stasis of blood and obstruction of menstruation), rheumatism and paralysis, bruises and other diseases.
In addition to the above three drugs, there are other clinical herbs that can relieve cough and resolve phlegm, which can be used according to the patient’s specific condition after identification and selection of appropriate Chinese medicine.
