Walking leg pain beware of lower limb atherosclerosis

A significant portion of the elderly and even middle-aged people have such experience, walking a distance after the emergence of one or both calf belly pain, so that forced to stop, rest a few moments, the pain disappeared, but also continue to walk; the above symptoms recur, so that a journey to stop several times to rest. This symptom is often thought of as old age and leg inconvenience, but in fact it is a sign of atherosclerosis of the lower extremities, which in medical terms is called intermittent claudication. Lower extremity atherosclerosis is part of systemic atherosclerosis. Its characteristics include: 1. High disability rate Atherosclerosis is a common disease in the elderly population, with a prevalence of up to 80% in people over 60 years old in China, and some people have developed the disease at the age of 40, and the onset tends to be younger. The disease is called atherosclerosis-occlusive disease when the atheromatous material in the arterial wall grows larger and the secondary formation of blood clots causes narrowing and occlusion of the arterial lumen. The most common symptoms of the disease are pain and abnormal sensation. Generally, the earliest appearances are cold legs and feet, and then the development of walking difficulties (such as intermittent claudication), resting pain (cold and pale or purple limbs, often pain at night, the effect of pain medication is not obvious), to the advanced stage, there will be black toe ulceration and destruction of death, and even wake up in pain in sleep, or sitting on the knees, sleepless nights, the patient basically lost the ability to walk, or even the need for amputation. 2, easy to misdiagnosis: early detection, early treatment for the disease is extremely important. Because the early symptoms of the disease are cold legs and feet, intermittent claudication, so the diagnosis and treatment are often neglected. It is often easily misdiagnosed as lumbar disc herniation, neuralgia and so on. As a result, the condition of some patients is further delayed and they finally have to undergo amputation. In the event of leg pain, cold legs and feet, limited walking, especially in patients with diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, the possibility of atherosclerosis occlusive disease should be thought of. For patients with these symptoms, vascular ultrasound, vascular magnetic resonance, vascular CT, and angiography are used to clarify the diagnosis, determine the severity of the disease, and decide on the treatment plan. Coronary heart disease and cerebral infarction are familiar serious diseases with high mortality and morbidity, and their essence is atherosclerosis. However, lower limb atherosclerosis occlusive disease, which is also caused by atherosclerosis, has not received sufficient attention. In recent years, the incidence of this disease has increased dramatically, and a significant percentage of patients seek medical attention too late, resulting in amputation, disability, and even death. Lower extremity atherosclerosis occlusive disease and the above diseases are essentially the same, that is, atherosclerosis, only the occurrence of different sites, coronary heart disease is heart vascular sclerosis, cerebral infarction is cerebral vascular sclerosis blockage, lower extremity atherosclerosis occlusive disease is the lower extremity vascular sclerosis occlusion. It is worth paying attention to the fact that all vascular sclerosis is systemic, because the whole body blood vessels are a whole system. More than 80% of patients with coronary heart disease, hypertension and cerebral infarction have lower limb atherosclerosis combined, and 80% of patients with atherosclerosis have heart and brain disease combined. And lower limb arteriosclerosis occlusion is the local manifestation of systemic arteriosclerosis. The cause of arteriosclerosis occlusive disease of the limbs is not well understood by modern medicine, except that it is related to hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, smoking, obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes, long-term ambulatory work, lack of exercise, as well as tension and family history, etc. It may also be related to the damage of blood vessel wall caused by bacterial and viral infection. Under the action of many factors mentioned above, the intima of blood vessels becomes edematous and lipid substances are deposited on the vessel wall, prompting atheromatous calcification and collapse of the intima to form ulcers on the vessel wall, followed by vascular sclerosis and contracture, resulting in narrowing and occlusion of the lumen. Chinese medicine believes that the spleen and kidneys of the middle-aged and elderly are gradually insufficient, resulting in “phlegm and dampness”, stagnating in the veins and blood channels, resulting in the blockage of qi and blood, and the loss of nourishment of the distal skin and tendons, or the onset of this disease due to the dampness and heat outside the evil for a long time. This disease can never be cured by prescription, patients should pay enough attention to this disease, early detection, early medical treatment.
