When a herniated lumbar disc requires surgery

Patients with lumbar disc herniation, often feel confused, is the choice of surgery or choose conservative treatment, often each hospital’s statement is different, here I would like to say that most of the no absolute indications for surgery, surgery or not according to the patient’s clinical manifestations and imaging manifestations of the comprehensive consideration. 1.Imaging with disc herniation, and lower extremity pain and numbness and other sensory abnormalities, the patient can not tolerate, can choose surgery. 2.Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc with decreased muscle strength of lower limbs (e.g. big toe can’t be lifted, weakness in lifting feet, etc.). 3.Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc, affecting urination and defecation and sexual function, including numbness in the saddle area. 4.Imaging manifestation of free intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus), surgical treatment is recommended, which predicts the ineffectiveness of conservative treatment.
