Gray nails are a common infection caused by a fungus that infects the nail plate and subnail tissue. Gray nails do not cause significant itching in the clinic. In the early stages of gray nails, patients do not have any symptoms. However, when the patient finds out, there are one or more grayish-yellow or white patches on the nails, mostly underneath the nails. There may also be visible flakes of skin in areas like the nail crevices. However, as the condition progresses, the nail may become damaged and fall off, which can cause pain. In more serious cases, it can lead to bacterial infections such as onychomycosis. Therefore, itching is not the first symptom of gray nails.
