Many patients are told that they have chronic cholecystitis during ultrasound examination. The ultrasound images show thickening or grossness of the gallbladder wall, poor bile transmission and so on. Patients may suffer from right upper abdominal distension or pain, including right shoulder and back discomfort, dry mouth in the morning, belching, etc. The body temperature is usually normal. It is more common in women. In fact, most of this condition is not an infectious disease, unlike bacterial cholecystitis, sometimes although infusion therapy (antibiotics such as levofloxacin, etc.) is not effective, with no significant improvement in symptoms. Chinese medicine treatment has the advantage of fast and effective results when combined with herbal remedies that reflect the treatment method of “dredging the liver and Qi, strengthening the spleen and stomach”. However, this particular type of cholecystitis is not easily cured completely and is prone to recurrent attacks, with exertion, exposure to cold, anger, irregular lifestyle, and overly greasy diet being common triggers and aggravating factors. Why is it that the common Chinese medicines used to treat cholecystitis, such as anti-inflammatory and cholagogic tablets, do not work well when the disease develops? The reason is that Chinese medicine has observed that chronic cholecystitis develops after middle age, which is related to the deficiency of vital energy and belongs to the evidence of “original deficiency and actuality”, so “supporting the righteous and dispelling the evil” is the correct treatment, and not paying attention to supporting the righteous (strengthening the spleen and replenishing the vital energy), but unilaterally emphasizing dispelling the evil, will not be effective. Most of the commonly used Chinese patent medicines such as anti-inflammatory and cholagogue tablets are composed of drugs to regulate qi and relieve pain, which lack the ingredients to support the righteousness, so the symptoms may be reduced for a while after taking them, but the effect is not lasting. Patients who have improved or remitted after treatment should pay long-term attention to: regular life, reasonable diet, avoid overwork, prevent cold and keep warm, and be in a relaxed mood, otherwise, they will relapse.
