Different topical nasal treatments are often used for nasal sinus disease. The most common are corticosteroid nasal sprays, nasal saline sprays and nasal rinses. Corticosteroid Nasal Spray These medications mimic the body’s natural hormones and help fight inflammation. When nasal tissues become inflamed and cause obstruction, steroids can help reduce swelling and make the whistle flow more freely. Nasal Saline Spray Does not include corticosteroids, no medications, only salt water, which helps treat a variety of nasal conditions. Saline nasal spray goes into the nasal passages, but because the amount of saline is small, it may not go all the way into the sinuses. Larger amounts of saline rinses may be more effective at cleaning the sinuses. Nonetheless, saline sprays have a role in moisturizing the nasal mucosa and rinsing the nasal passages. Nasal Saline Rinses The American Rhinologic Society states that when nasal rinses are done in larger volumes, they are more likely to flush into the sinuses. Nasal rinsing involves passing saline water in through one nostril, allowing it to pass through the sinuses and out the other nostril. It is usually similar to a small plastic teapot or squeezable nasal rinse bottle. Nasal rinsing helps to remove mucus from the nasal passages and may also help to reduce inflammation. This may be due to helping the nasal passages remove small particles, bacteria and viruses that can cause allergies and inflammation. The American Academy of Allergy and Immunology recommends that a medical professional accurately diagnose the condition and suggest an effective treatment plan. Decongestant Nasal Spray Shrinks blood vessels and tissues and reduces mucus production. It can provide temporary relief from nasal congestion. The effect usually lasts for a few hours, after which the mucous membranes swell again. If used continuously for more than 3-7 days, the swelling recurrence may become stronger and therefore is not suitable for long-term use.
