Chinese New Year is coming: Antibiotics meets alcohol

The Spring Festival is approaching, alcohol parties become frequent, a variety of activities should be overwhelmed, friends and family small wine to enjoy, whether it is white wine or wine, contain a certain amount of alcohol. Some personnel due to health factors oral antibiotics, do not understand the knowledge of taking antibiotics should not drink alcohol, and even for life-threatening. Oral antibiotics drinking alcohol is easy to appear disulfiram reaction. Disulfiram (disulfiram) is the common name for alcohol withdrawal sulfur drugs, is a treatment of chronic ethanol poisoning and ethanol toxicity psychosis drugs, but the current clinical use of certain drugs, its chemical structure or mechanism of action is similar to disulfiram, can produce disulfiram-like reaction, also known as Antabuse (antabuse) reaction. Characteristics of disulfiram reaction: Drinking alcohol within one week after using drugs that can cause disulfiram-like reaction, may appear facial and general skin flushing, conjunctival redness, feverish feeling, dry mouth, dizziness, headache, dizziness, panic, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, sweating, breathing difficulties, nausea and vomiting, confusion in speech, talk a lot, blurred vision, gait unsteadiness, frenzy, delirium, impaired consciousness, fainting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, tingling in the throat, tremor sensation, garlic odor in the mouth, but also tachycardia, blood pressure drop, agitation, panic and fear, sense of near death, some may have confusion, numbness of the limbs, incontinence, and in severe cases shock, convulsions, acute heart failure, acute liver damage, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and even death. This performance and disulfiram inhibit the body of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and dopamine β aldolase and so on, this group of clinical syndromes performance is called disulfiram-like reaction. Time characteristics of disulfiram-like reaction: drinking alcohol after using drugs with disulfiram-like reaction, symptoms can appear as early as 5min, usually in 30min, a few in lh, rarely in 1h before the appearance of disulfiram-like reaction. After the pediatric application of drugs that can cause disulfiram-like reaction, should be 2 weeks ~ 3 weeks after the discontinuation of the drug, avoid drinking alcohol or eating food containing ethanol, because the pediatric liver metabolism of ethanol function is mildly poor, even if a lower concentration of ethanol can be such a reaction. There is individual variability in disulfiram-like reactions. Characteristics of disulfiram-like reaction and the type and amount of alcohol consumed: disulfiram-like reaction is proportional to the dose of the drug used, the interval after stopping the drug, and the amount of alcohol consumed, and the relationship with the type of alcohol consumed is not clear. A disulfiram-like reaction has been reported with 50mL of beer. White wine, red wine, yellow wine, beer and ethanol-containing beverages can cause a disulfiram-like reaction. When a disulfiram reaction occurs, it often lasts about 2h and can be gradually relieved, and in severe cases, it can last 24h or several days before complete relief. Common drugs causing disulfiram-like reaction: 1, cephalosporin antibiotics. 2, Nitroimidazoles: such as metronidazole, tinidazole. 3, other drugs and food furans: furazolidone (dysentery), chloramphenicol, ketoconazole, ashwagandha, sulfonylurea hypoglycemic drugs such as chlorosulfonylurea, Damicam, toluene sulfonylurea (D860), euglycemic acid, phenyl ethyl bisabololol, warfarin, trifluazinam, tulathrin, insulin and so on. Drinking alcohol (e.g. white wine, red wine, yellow wine, beer), taking ethanol-containing medicines such as syrups (brown syrup, patchouli, hydrocortisone, etc.) or tinctures, consuming certain foods (e.g. alcoholic chocolates, cheeses, animal livers, sardines and other tyramine-, phenylpropionic acid-, tryptophanic acid-rich foods and ethanol-containing beverages), topical application of ethanol (e.g. ethanol scrubs, disinfections), and doing Photo-quantum therapy, etc. can cause a disulfiram-like reaction. Disulfiram reaction is graded as follows: Mild: facial or generalized flushing of the skin, mild dizziness, panic, no nausea, vomiting, fever, headache, etc. Moderate: dizziness, headache, fever. Moderate: dizziness, headache, panic, nausea, vomiting, fever, but no chest pain, dyspnea, shock. Severe: chest pain, dyspnea, shock, and even impaired consciousness and incontinence. Warm tips: do not drink alcohol when using antibiotics.
