Dioscorea villosa belongs to traditional Chinese medicine prescription, recorded in “Ulcerology Xinyi Jie – Fanghui”, which consists of Dioscorea villosa, Angelica sinensis tail, Mudanpi, Ox Knee, Fenghui, Papaya, Coix lacryma, Gentiana scabra and other proprietary Chinese medicines. In this formula, Dioscorea villosa, Fenghui, Papaya dispels wind and disperses cold; Coix Seed and Mudan Pi resolve dampness and clear heat; Cow’s Knee invigorates the Blood and opens the collaterals; and Angelica Tail nourishes the Blood and harmonizes the collaterals. Dioscorea rubra is used to treat external carbuncle with localized redness, swelling, heat and pain, mostly in the lower part of the body which is damp-heat.
