How is tricuspid regurgitation treated?

The choice of treatment for tricuspid regurgitation depends on the cause and severity of the condition.
In patients with organic lesions of the tricuspid valve, the valve may be replaced.
In patients with tricuspid valve endocarditis, the diseased valve tissue may be removed to eradicate the endocarditis and antibiotic therapy may be continued.
In patients with tricuspid regurgitation secondary to left heart failure, treatment focuses on adequate control of fluid overload and signs of failure (e.g. diuretic therapy), with the addition of antiarrhythmic agents as needed to control atrial fibrillation.
For patients with moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation, surgical treatment such as valvuloplasty and valve replacement may be considered.
