What are the causes of frequent bowel movements in the elderly

Elderly people with frequent stools mostly consider the following causes: First, acute and chronic gastrointestinal diseases: such as acute gastroenteritis, ulcerative colitis, intestinal tuberculosis, intestinal tumors, Crohn’s disease. Second, extra-intestinal factors: such as chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver cancer, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, can cause rapid intestinal peristalsis and more frequent stools. Third, psychological and mental factors: such as gastrointestinal neurosis, mental tension, emotional depression, environmental factors caused by irritable bowel syndrome and so on. When the nature of the stool, color and defecation habits change, we should pay attention to further examination, including colonoscopy, to understand whether there are organic lesions, the elderly should pay particular attention to exclude tumors inside and outside the intestinal tract.
