In Chinese medicine, the cessation of menstruation for three cycles or six months or more after the onset of menstruation is called amenorrhea. The stoppage of menstruation during pregnancy and breastfeeding is mostly physiologic amenorrhea, which can be left untreated. Pathological amenorrhea is also known as amenorrhea, which can be treated with Chinese herbs such as Dajianyuan Decoction, Ginseng Ling Baijushu San and Wenjing Tang. Clinically, amenorrhea is generally categorized into kidney qi deficiency, kidney yin deficiency, kidney yang deficiency, spleen deficiency, essence and blood deficiency, qi stagnation and blood stasis (blood stagnation due to the lack of qi), cold and blood stasis, and phlegm-dampness obstruction. 1. Kidney qi deficiency: patients manifesting late onset of menstruation, gradual amenorrhea, lumbar and knee soreness, dizziness, tinnitus, and frequent urination. Da Tian Yuan Decoction can be used to tonify kidney qi, nourish blood and regulate menstruation (regulating menstrual irregularities due to blood deficiency). It is not suitable for patients with cold and fever. 2. Spleen qi deficiency: patients with menopause for several months, fatigue (mental exhaustion, physical weakness), epigastric and abdominal distension, loss of appetite, and loose stools. Ginseng Ling and Atractylodes Macrocephalae can be used to strengthen the spleen and vital energy, nourish blood and regulate menstruation. 3. Cold-congealed blood stasis syndrome: the patient manifests as menopause for several months, cold pain in the abdomen that refuses to be pressed, pain relieved by heat, cold form (cold body), cold limbs, and pale color. You can use Wenjing Tang to warm the menstruation and disperse cold (warm the human body meridians, get rid of the body’s cold), blood circulation and menstruation effect. It is contraindicated for pregnant women. Before using Chinese herbal medicine for treatment of amenorrhea, patients should have the identification of a Chinese medicine practitioner and should not blindly use the medicine on their own. Amenorrhea may also be caused by polycystic ovary syndrome, premature ovarian failure and other diseases, it is recommended to go to the hospital to identify the cause of the disease and then treat it.
