Children with HFMD can develop a cough, which usually causes a respiratory tract infection or a secondary respiratory tract infection. The cough itself does not cause serious consequences. If the cough is more intense and prolonged, it is likely to cause chest pain when coughing. But otherwise, it does not cause serious consequences. What does cause serious consequences may be the disease that caused the cough. The cough may indicate acute bronchitis, but it may also indicate pneumonia, so a chest X-ray or chest CT should be performed to determine if there is a serious disease such as pneumonia. If there is and it is not detected and treated, pneumonia is likely to continue to progress and will not heal for a long time.
