Ambien is the trade name and generic name for apixaban, which is used primarily for the prevention of venous thromboembolic events in adult patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement. Apixaban is a potent, orally effective, reversible, direct, highly selective inhibitor of the active site of factor Xa. Through inhibition of factor Xa, it inhibits thrombin production and inhibits thrombosis. It is used primarily in adult patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement to prevent venous thromboembolic events. It is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to apixaban or any of the excipients in the tablets; avoided in pregnant and lactating women; contraindicated in patients with clinically significant active bleeding; and also contraindicated in patients with hepatic disease with coagulation abnormalities and clinically relevant risk of bleeding. In addition, adverse reactions such as anemia, bleeding, nausea and bruising may occur with the use of this product.
