What is the difference between Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang and Zhen Wu Tang?

Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang and Zhen Wu Tang belong to the same category of dampness expelling agents that warm cold dampness. However, the composition, main treatment, efficacy and precautions of the two formulas are different. Consultation with a physician is recommended before use. Poria and Atractylodis Macrocephalae are included in the composition of both formulas. The difference is that in Ling Gui Jiu Gan Tang, there are Gui Zhi and Zhi Gan Cao, while in Zhen Wu Tang, there are Paeoniae Alba, Ginger and Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori. In terms of efficacy, Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang warms the yang and resolves fluid (warming the yang qi in the body to promote water metabolism), strengthens the spleen and induces dampness, while Zhen Wu Tang warms the yang and induces diuresis (replenishing the yang qi in the body to promote the circulation of fluids). In terms of main treatment, Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang is used to treat phlegm-drink (a pathological product of impaired water-liquid metabolism) caused by deficiency of yang in the middle Jiao. It is indicated for symptoms such as fullness in the chest and ribs, dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), and cough. Zhen Wu Tang is used for treating Yang deficiency and water flooding (Yang deficiency causing obstruction to the flow of water and liquid in the body). It is suitable for symptoms such as dysuria (unsmooth urination), swelling under the waist, heavy and painful limbs, chills (fear of cold, cold limbs), and abdominal pain. In terms of precautions, if the symptoms of coughing up phlegm and sticky phlegm occur due to the entry of drinking evil into the interior and the transformation of heat, Ling Gui Jiu Gan Tang is not suitable for use. If dampness-heat internalization leads to dysuria and swelling, Zhenwu Tang should not be used. The adverse effects and contraindications of the above formula are not clear. Patients are advised to consult the doctor if they feel unwell, so as to avoid delay.
