Peritoneal dialysis is the use of the peritoneum as a semi-permeable membrane, through the continuous replacement of peritoneal dialysis fluid, in order to achieve the purpose of removing metabolites, toxic substances and correcting water and electrolyte balance disorders in the body. Generally speaking, peritoneal dialysis is able to do more than ten years. Peritoneal dialysis is better for the protection of residual kidney function, and it can be operated at home, which brings a lot of convenience. Especially in the first five years, the peritoneal function is better, the dialysis level is better, and the ability to remove excess water and toxins from the body is very good, and the patient’s survival will be very good. The main problems faced in the early phase of peritoneal dialysis are the drift of the peritoneal catheter and peritonitis, and in the middle phase, the most frequent problems are peritonitis and the degeneration of peritoneal function. Therefore, even after starting peritoneal dialysis, it is necessary to take regular oral medication to prevent complications of kidney disease, as well as to pay attention to dietary control, to achieve a low-salt, low-fat diet, and to avoid the abuse of drugs, so as not to increase the burden on the body. The current technology is getting more and more mature, and the duration of peritoneal dialysis is getting longer and longer, so I believe we can eventually use peritoneal dialysis for life.
