Will a torn ligament heal on its own?

Whether or not a torn ligament can heal depends on the extent of the tear. If the ligament is not completely torn, it can heal by itself (the first three months of the ligament injury is fixed, pressure bandage, topical medicine to relax the tendons and blood, reduce swelling and pain, in the first month of the ligament tear, do not move the affected area to prevent the second injury, the second month can do some simple activities under the guidance of the doctor). If the ligament is completely torn and does not heal on its own, ligament repair surgery is required. The surgery is performed by re-suturing the torn ligament to allow the ligament scar to heal and regain strength. In the early post-operative period the ligament needs to be immobilized to avoid pulling on it or it will allow it to re-injure. But at the same time the muscles should be isotonically contracted to avoid muscle atrophy. The ability of normal life can be basically restored in 9-12 weeks after surgery. At 3 months after surgery, the ligaments will be reviewed at the hospital to see how they recover.
