Whitening toothpaste does not cause teeth whitening. Normal human teeth are pale yellow in color, due to the dentin through the transparent tooth enamel. Teeth cannot be whitened by brushing, but if a patient has unattractive tooth color due to many pigments covering the teeth or the presence of calculus, the teeth can be restored to their original color by removing the pigments covering the teeth through treatments such as ultrasonic supragingival scaling or sandblasting. However, whitening toothpaste will not whiten the teeth and patients are advised not to enter into misconceptions and not to be misled by advertisements.
