Phlegm-dampness is a Chinese medical term that is mainly due to the weakness of the spleen and stomach caused by the consumption of fatty, sweet, greasy or cold products. Because of the malfunction of the spleen and stomach, phlegm-dampness appears. Patients with this condition often present with obesity, heavy limbs, a feeling of heaviness in both lower limbs when walking, stickiness in the mouth, and unpleasantly stagnant stools. Most of the patients express poor bowel movement when they visit the clinic, which means that phlegm and dampness are heavier. Checking the patient’s tongue, it can appear as a light and fat tongue with white and greasy tongue coating. Clinically, you can use Er Chen Tang with addition and subtraction, or you can use Wenzhi Tang with addition and subtraction, both of which are herbal formulas for the treatment of phlegm-dampness. Chen Pi is a good herb for resolving phlegm dampness, for example, when cooking ribs or stewing meat, you can put some Chen Pi. In clinical cases of phlegm-dampness, most of the patients have obvious spleen deficiency, so when treating phlegm-dampness, you can add some spleen-strengthening drugs, you can use Si Jun Zi Tang plus or minus, and combine it with Er Chen Tang or Wen Gao Tang for better results.
