Whether to void or hold the urine during urinary catheter removal

Urinary catheter removal is usually done by emptying the urine, and if the patient has prostate disease as well as urinary tract infections, he/she needs to hold his/her urine. It is recommended that patients ensure that the vulva is clean after the removal of the urinary catheter to avoid infection. In most cases, patients do not need to hold their urine when removing the urinary catheter, but if the patient suffers from prostate diseases such as prostate hyperplasia or prostate enlargement, or urinary tract infections such as urethritis, cystitis, and other urinary tract infections, there will be frequent urination, urinary urgency and other urinary difficulties. Patients should hold their urine appropriately before the removal of the urinary catheter, which helps to test whether the patient’s urinary function improves or recovers after the removal of the urinary catheter. After removing the urinary catheter, patients should pay attention to the vulva cleaning. It is recommended that patients wash the vulva in a timely manner to ensure that the vulva is dry and to prevent symptoms of infection such as redness, swelling, itching and pain. Generally patients do not need to urinate when pulling out the urinary catheter, but need to hold their urine if they have prostate hyperplasia, urethritis and other diseases of the reproductive system. After the extraction of urinary catheter, patients should develop healthy habits, drink appropriate water, urinate on time, and follow the doctor’s instructions for review.
