Emergency extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy treatment of acute renal colic caused by ureteral stones Acute renal colic caused by ureteral stones is one of the most common emergencies in urology, the patient is often in the activities of the sudden emergence of one side of the lumbar severe pain, pain is severe and intolerable, paroxysmal colic-based, mostly accompanied by hematuria, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. Clinically, the current antispasmodic and analgesic, anti-inflammatory and other symptomatic treatment, such as renal colic relief, and then for further treatment, we observed in clinical work, some patients with the efficacy is not obvious, especially those who are complicated by urinary tract infections, the pain tends to persist or recurring, and can not be fundamentally relieved of the patient’s pain. Since 2003, we have applied extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) to treat patients with acute episodes of renal colic caused by ureteral stones, with remarkable results, clear efficacy, and no obvious adverse reactions. Both the symptoms and the root cause were treated, and the patient’s pain was relieved fundamentally. The symptoms and signs of the patients are consistent with the typical renal, ureteral colic diagnosis, from the onset to the treatment time of about 4 hours to 10 days, the stone is located in the upper or lower ureter, are unilateral onset. The patients were all diagnosed by imaging and had no contraindications to ESWL. Low-energy lithotripsy, accurate focus, not easy to shift, stone crushing particles, high success rate of stone removal, small trauma, minimize the damage to the tissues, ESWL treatment, the patients renal colic symptoms quickly and significantly relieved, all one-time lithotripsy success. Emergency treatment of ureteral stone during the onset of renal colic is in accordance with the principle of ESWL treatment, which is the first choice of treatment for ureteral stone, because the recent displacement of the stone and the ureteral tissue has not formed an adhesion, the interface around the stone is better, and it is easy to diffuse after receiving the shock wave, so it can relieve the spasm of the ureter in time to alleviate the renal colic and relieve ureteral obstruction as early as possible, and it is conducive to the recovery of hydrocele as soon as possible. After ESWL treatment, the stones are discharged faster, shorter, and not easy to remain, which is conducive to improving the rate of stone discharge after lithotripsy, thus achieving both symptomatic and curative treatment, which not only shortens the course of the disease, but also reduces the cost of patients’ visits to the clinic. Therefore, we believe that strict control of the indications for ESWL treatment, standardized operating procedures, lithotripsy is effective, less traumatic, low cost, has a high lithotripsy success rate, and can effectively avoid the occurrence of serious complications. Timely relief of the patient’s pain, follow-up observation, no adverse reactions were found, it is a treatment method worthy of popularization and application.
