Composition and efficacy of Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang

Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang is composed of Chai Hu, Gui Zhi, Gan Jiang, etc. It has the efficacy of harmonizing and dispersing cold (reconciling the Shaoyang to dissipate the cold), and generating fluid and astringing yin (growing fluid and astringing the yin fluid). Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang (柴胡桂枝干姜汤) is from Zhang Zhong Jing’s “Treatise on Typhoid Fever” (伤寒论), and is indicated for the symptoms of Shao Yang (少阳), which is one of the six meridians of Typhoid Fever (伤寒论六经病, with the location of the disease between the surface and the inside), with symptoms of cold and heat, with the fever being milder, bitter fullness in the chest and hypochondrium (with the feeling of fullness and discomfort in front and at both sides of the chest), dysuria (unsmooth urination), sweating in the head, and heartburn.
