The main points of TCM diagnosis of Liver and Kidney Deficiency (weakness of the liver and kidneys) are lumbar and knee soreness (a feeling of weakness and tenderness in the waist and knees), tinnitus, red tongue with little moss, and a thin pulse (a pulse that becomes narrower, thinner, and quicker in rate). Deficiency of the liver and kidneys, i.e., deficiency of both the liver and kidneys, may be caused by congenital insufficiency, prolonged illness and physical weakness, and dietary irregularities. Deficiency of the liver and kidneys results in deficiency of yin and essence and loss of nourishment, which can lead to symptoms such as soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, palpitations (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), hot flashes (bursts of heat), ringing in the ears, dizziness, insomnia, forgetfulness, a red tongue with little moss, and a fine pulse, etc. All of the above symptoms are key points of identification in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Deficiency of the liver and kidneys can be treated with medicines that nourish the liver and kidneys, such as dried Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Cornus Officinalis, Fructus Lycii, Radix et Rhizoma Gastrodiae, Radix Gastrodiae Praeparata, Chasteberry, and Radix Polygoni Multiflori, or with formulas such as Tiger Diving Pill and Blood Tonic and Rongjin Pill. If treatment is not timely, it may also lead to further progression of the condition, causing Yin deficiency of the liver and kidneys (insufficient Yin fluid in the liver and kidneys). Patients who need to use medication should be instructed by a doctor.
