The awareness process of glaucoma among the people

Glaucoma is the second most blinding eye disease in the world, and there are nearly 10 million glaucoma patients in China. The visual impairment caused by glaucoma is mainly characterized by characteristic and progressive visual field defects, that is, a reduction or loss of the spatial extent of what the eye sees. It is well known that reduced visual acuity causes blurred vision and affects a person’s work and life. It may be difficult for the average person to imagine what kind of impact visual field defects can have on people’s daily lives. People with glaucoma with visual field loss cannot see steps or obstacles below them, so they walk with their feet very high for fear of tripping; they cannot see people or things outside their field of vision, so they do not greet people they know and often have collisions. Glaucoma patients usually develop “tubular vision” in the advanced stage, which means that they can only see things within a very narrow range directly in front of them, just like “a leopard in a tube”, and can only see “a spot of a leopard”. “In this case, the patient can only see a very narrow area in front of him or her. More than half of all glaucoma patients present to the hospital with severe visual field loss, and many are even blind in one eye with no sense of light at the time of presentation. Glaucoma can be asymptomatic in its early stages, but this “invisible killer” is already stealing your vision without you knowing it. Therefore, it is especially important to have regular “eye exams” at a regular hospital ophthalmology department. 40 years of age or older should receive an “eye exam” every two years; those with a history of immediate family members with glaucoma should have their eyes examined once a year. People with a family history of glaucoma and diabetes should have an annual exam even if they are less than 40 years old. The so-called “eye checkup” is not a general physical examination such as vision, but requires some “fundus and visual field examination” and other specialized tests. In addition, if you always have a rainbow-like colored band above your eyes when looking at lights, doctors call it “rainbow vision circle”, which is a pre-symptom of glaucoma, if the colored band appears at the same time with blurred vision and vision loss, please go to the hospital immediately to confirm or exclude glaucoma. Once diagnosed with glaucoma, patients should have a proper understanding of the disease in order to cooperate with the doctor’s treatment to delay the progression of the disease and preserve their vision to the maximum extent. Glaucoma is an irreversible and blinding eye disease, which means that the cure for glaucoma is to effectively control the disease from progressing. Early detection, early treatment and control of intraocular pressure in the ideal range will allow most patients to preserve useful vision during their lifetime and avoid the eventual end of blindness. The current treatment of glaucoma includes medication and surgery. There is a wide range of IOP-lowering medications on the market today, and each patient’s sensitivity to different medications varies, and the effect of medications may be unstable after a period of use. Glaucoma filtering surgery may also result in blockage of the filter tract and a re-increase in IOP. Therefore, patients with glaucoma who are treated with medication or surgery should be followed up. Once you have glaucoma, you have to be friends with your ophthalmologist for the rest of your life, says Dr. Yanming Huang. At least 10 days and a half months, you should talk to your glaucoma specialist and have your IOP measured. There is no course of treatment for glaucoma, no end point. One quarter of the world’s glaucoma patients are in China, and more than 80% of the country’s glaucoma patients are undiagnosed and untreated. The awareness of glaucoma among the people needs to be improved urgently, and the only way to prevent and control the blindness caused by glaucoma is to achieve early detection and regular treatment for glaucoma at the root.
