Glaucoma is a common blinding eye disease. In layman’s terms, this means that the pressure in the eye of a glaucoma patient is abnormally elevated, causing optic nerve atrophy and the loss and narrowing of the visual field, which, if not properly diagnosed and treated in a timely manner, will eventually lead to blindness in the affected eye. To date, optic nerve atrophy is impossible to recover, and thus blindness due to glaucoma will not restore vision and visual field even with the best treatment. Therefore, early detection and treatment is a key to preventing blindness from glaucoma. Diagnosis of glaucoma cannot usually be self-judged, and the diagnosis of glaucoma should still be made by a specialist. Because most primary open-angle glaucoma has no conscious symptoms, the disease progresses slowly. Unknowingly, vision and visual field are lost, like a thief stealing something, quietly “stealing vision”. Even in acute closed-angle glaucoma, the onset of headache, eye distention, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms are prominent, and some patients often do not go to the ophthalmology department for the first time, and lose the opportunity to save the visual function early. The acute attack of closed-angle glaucoma, if the intraocular pressure is not controlled in time, vision can be lost as quickly as a robber steals money. Therefore, acute closed-angle glaucoma should be more second to second, immediately ask the ophthalmologist for a clear diagnosis and treatment. (1) The diagnosis of early glaucoma is not necessarily a bad thing, because the efficacy and prognosis of early and late treatment of glaucoma are very different, and early diagnosis and early treatment is one of the keys to determine the prognosis of the disease. (2) Treat glaucoma with an optimistic and forward-looking attitude. Although glaucoma may cause blindness, as long as it is detected early and treated reasonably, most people may maintain useful vision throughout their lives. (3) Glaucoma is a lifelong disease, and you may have to deal with your eye doctor for the rest of your life. Trust and respect every word of advice and every medical prescription from your chosen doctor, learn to treat glaucoma well, adapt to living with it, and get used to daily medication and regular follow-up reviews once a week, once a month or several times a year. (4) Treatment of glaucoma includes medication, surgery, laser treatment, and cryotherapy and ultrasound. Most types of glaucoma, especially closed-angle glaucoma, require surgical treatment, and surgery is even preferred. (5) Today’s glaucoma treatment emphasizes individualized treatment, i.e., different methods are used according to the patient’s specific situation.
