Compensatory enlargement of the right kidney is mainly seen in physiological phenomenon caused by left nephrectomy, but also may be caused by nephritis, ureteral blockage and other diseases resulting in atrophy of the left side of the kidney after the compensatory enlargement of the right kidney.
1. Physiological phenomenon: patients may undergo left nephrectomy, due to the loss of function of the left kidney, the right kidney takes over the metabolic function of the left kidney, the right kidney volume and will increase, so the patients will have a compensatory enlargement of the right kidney.
2. Nephritis: patients with nephritis will have hematuria, proteinuria, edema and other phenomena. The kidney function of nephritis patients is affected, so the patients will have the symptom of compensatory enlargement of the right kidney.
3. Ureteral blockage: Ureteral blockage is caused by factors such as stones or blood clots in the ureter, which will lead to urine reflux and patients will have hydronephrosis. As a result, patients will have a compensatory enlargement of the right kidney.
When patients have symptoms of compensated enlargement of the right kidney, no treatment is needed if it is a physiological phenomenon. If it is caused by disease, it is recommended that the patient go to the hospital in time, follow the doctor’s instructions to improve the examination, and timely symptomatic treatment.
