Herpes can appear in the mouth of children with HFMD, mostly on the tongue and buccal mucosa, and to a lesser extent on the lateral lips and hard palate, and also around the mouth. It starts as red patches and then develops into blisters with a reddish halo around them. The blisters rupture in about 2-5 days, forming shallow grayish-white and yellowish bases with erythematous spots surrounding the ulcers, at which point the child may report a sore throat or refuse to eat. In addition to the ulcers in the mouth, similar herpes can appear on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and buttocks.
