Current Status and Development of Acupuncture

  I. The status and role of acupuncture in clinical treatment Acupuncture is a discipline guided by Chinese medical theory, studying meridians, acupoints, and acupuncture methods, and exploring acupuncture to prevent and treat diseases (1). This is the positioning of acupuncture in the textbook of acupuncture and moxibustion. But specifically in the clinical context, acupuncture is only a treatment method for diseases, like medicine, intramuscular injection, intravenous injection, surgery, massage, according to the patient’s condition, the patient’s degree of acceptance, the doctor to choose a variety of treatment methods. I think this is the more accurate positioning of acupuncture therapy in the clinic. For the choice of treatment method as a doctor, generally from these aspects of consideration, adaptability, efficacy, ease of use, economic, safety degree. Although acupuncture therapy is claimed to have the advantages of wide indications, significant efficacy, ease of application, and economic safety. These advantages were indeed true in the period when science was not developed. Today, with the rapid development of various scientific technologies and the integration of technologies from various disciplines, these advantages of acupuncture therapy have been very insignificant, if not gone. “The current systematic evaluation of acupuncture is in the Cochran Library for a total of 68 conditions, of which only six, such as primary headache, chronic neck pain, and post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting, confirm the clinical efficacy of acupuncture for them (2).” The formation of this situation is due to the formation and development of acupuncture and moxibustion process of congenital deficiencies, acquired bad, and now the urgent work of doctors, hospital managers of the near profit, so that the development of acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, and the development of modern science is out of touch, the basic theory and research methods lag caused, not the result of the acupuncture service model. Second, the reasons for the current lag in the development of acupuncture 1, acupuncture lacks the philosophical language to communicate with modern science, as well as research methods and theories to match with modern science. Chinese medicine was born in ancient times, and the theoretical system was formed in the pre-Qin, Qin and Han periods. The dominant philosophies at that time were the doctrine of essence and qi, the doctrine of yin and yang, and the doctrine of the five elements. These three doctrines were the ancient philosophical theories of simple materialism, and these three philosophical theories permeated all fields of Chinese medicine. They have become the main philosophical ideas of Chinese medicine. It is also the main philosophical thought that formed the development of acupuncture. Although simple materialism adheres to the correct position of the material unity of the world. But due to historical reasons, there are intuitive defects, lack of scientific argumentation; inability to thoroughly adhere to materialism and other principle problems. Therefore, Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, was born in the process of formation, and there were more macro theories than micro observations. The intuitive individual understanding instead of the universal scientific proof. In the study of clinical cases and observation of disease process, there is only self-experience feeling, but no specific objective indicators. Modern science is guided by the materialistic view of nature and methodology, focusing on cognitive research, advocating observation and practice, advocating that all knowledge comes from practice and experimentation, and advocating inductive methods. The philosophical foundation of acupuncture and moxibustion is still at the level of the ancient simple materialism of yin and yang, the five elements, and the doctrine of essence, and the research method is still the black box method and the trial and error method, so there is no way to communicate with modern science in philosophical language, development, and research methods. This has greatly limited the development of Chinese medicine as well as acupuncture. 2. Defects in the dissemination and research of Chinese medicine and acupuncture have limited their development. In the development process of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, from the formation of the theoretical system in the pre-Qin, Qin and Han periods, to the enrichment and systematization in Jin, Sui and Tang, as well as the hundred schools of thought in Song, Jin and Yuan; Ming, Qing and Republic of China repeatedly discussed. It is the theory and clinical treatment of Chinese medicine that is developing more and more, and the subspecialties are becoming more and more detailed. The scope of treatment is constantly expanding. However, throughout the entire Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, is mainly the development of clinical treatment medicine, basic medicine subordinate to clinical medicine. There is no separate basic medicine such as anatomy and laboratory science. Although Chinese medicine accumulated certain knowledge of human anatomy before the Shang and Zhou periods, but in the process of its development, bound by feudal rituals and superstitious ideas, ancient Chinese medical scholars did not have the ability and means to open the human body and animal internal research and analysis, and could only study human physiological phenomena, pathological changes by the black box method, trial and error method, analogy method, reasoning and deduction method. Research and development of acupuncture and moxibustion direction and ideas 1, using modern scientific theory and technology to study the existing Chinese medicine and acupuncture theory and clinical treatment methods. To remove the falsehoods and preserve the truth, and to return the original face of Chinese medicine and acupuncture. The outline of the history of Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion historiography of some issues” said in this paragraph “Chinese medical theory in its formation and evolution process, the era in which all the cultural and philosophical ideas will be more or less permeated, the false, real, true and false mixture of the unanalyzed in the laboratory, no matter how sophisticated technology, no matter how many years of research. No clear results can be obtained, …….. Therefore, before moving the medical theory into the laboratory, it is necessary to first strip away the non-practical components that have infiltrated it at different times, layer by layer, and add the scientific facts that are missing. …..” I think this is the key to how to understand and how to study the existing theories and clinical treatments of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, anything and academic theories and techniques, only by constantly advancing with the times. Only then will they not be eliminated by the times, and only then will they have vitality. To remove the falsehoods and preserve the truth, restore the original face of Chinese medicine and acupuncture therapy, using modern technology, clinical practice to seriously study and analyze its role and mechanism. Continuously improve the effectiveness of Chinese medicine and acupuncture therapy in clinical use. This is what will make acupuncture and moxibustion therapy and Chinese medicine vital and not eliminated by the times. Instead of relying on the government’s administrative policies to continue to support the survival. Or the formation of Chinese medicine westernization of the false progress. 2.Establish a modern way of thinking and philosophical language that communicates with modern science and technology with innovative new thinking as the main focus. Chinese medicine and acupuncture is an important part of the world of medical science and technology, the complexity of medicine and the extensiveness of thinking, requiring medical thinking must be open, multi-dimensional, three-dimensional innovative thinking. In order to have greater inclusiveness, constantly from new ideas, new views, new theories. New scientific theories and technologies from new methods. Make it more vitality. Chinese medicine and acupuncture, in today’s rapid development of modern science and technology, need a new philosophical language to communicate with modern science and rational representation to modern society. And the philosophical theories of TCM and acupuncture can no longer adapt to their development. The philosophical theories of Chinese medicine and acupuncture are no longer able to communicate with modern technology and society in an effective and reasonable way. Therefore, based on dialectical materialism, a new way of thinking and philosophical language of Chinese medicine and acupuncture theory is established. It is necessary to integrate Chinese medicine and acupuncture into modern science, to communicate with modern science, and to present them reasonably to modern society. Only then will they be accepted by the people of the world and modern society. Only then will it not shrink and disappear. 3, the introduction of modern science and technology to establish their own basic research system. To modernize Chinese medicine and acupuncture, to go global, to develop and progress, and to be accepted by modern society, there must be explanatory language, terminology, testing methods, and control standards that match modern science and technology. Therefore, the research of Chinese medicine and acupuncture needs a large amount of modern technology integration, combined with the use of modern technology methods, theory to carry out the basic research of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, to establish and improve the basic research system of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, so that the test methods, information control standards, diagnosis basis, efficacy assessment of Chinese medicine and acupuncture are more accurate, objective and quantitative. To make the use of Chinese medicine and acupuncture more convenient and economic, fast and effective, safe and flexible. This will make Chinese medicine and acupuncture therapy meet the needs of modern society, and more vital. 4, the development of Chinese medicine and acupuncture advantages. In today’s rapid development of science and technology, the integration of Chinese medicine into the tide of modern technological development is an inevitable trend, but not the demise and decay of Chinese medicine. Therefore, in the process of modernization of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, it is necessary to maintain its independence and autonomy to seek new and different ideas and to carry out pioneering development. To establish the test methods, control standards, diagnostic basis, and efficacy evaluation standards that are in line with the development of modern technology and the situation of Chinese medicine and acupuncture itself. We should not use the experimental methods of Western medicine to evaluate and explain the basic theories and clinical efficacy of Chinese medicine and acupuncture therapy. In the process of modernization of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, we can only reform Chinese medicine and acupuncture by constantly seeking new and different ideas, breaking the rules, using new and pioneering thinking, and embracing all modern advanced technology, and promoting the development of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, so that they can quickly integrate into the trend of modern advanced technology development, and continue to progress and innovate with the development of the times. In this way, Chinese medicine and acupuncture can make greater contributions to the health of mankind.
