How do you rehabilitate an ankle fracture after surgery?

For rehabilitation, there are only three situations: first, no surgery and only immobilization in a cast; second, immobilization in a cast after surgery; and third, no immobilization in a cast after surgery. Those who are immobilized with conservative treatment casts (braces) follow the principle of three-stage rehabilitation. After clinical management of the fracture, the swelling is reduced according to the RICE principle (R Rest and Brake, I Ice, C Compression Taping, E Elevation of the affected limb). The isometric contraction of the calf muscle within the plaster (brace) (only contracting the muscle, not moving the joint), flexion and extension of the toes, and full range of motion of the knee and hip joints. In the first stage, due to swelling, patients often need to lie in bed to elevate the affected limbs, for the frail to increase the content of bed health exercises. In the second stage, patients should be encouraged to get out of bed under the protection of plaster (brace), without weight-bearing on the affected limbs, and strengthen muscle strength training to prevent muscle atrophy. In the third stage, when the fracture is healed and the plaster is removed, the recovery training of ankle joint activities is mainly carried out, and various physical therapy methods such as hot compresses and exercise therapy can be used.
