What is ankle impingement?

Ankle impingement is one of the most common complications of ankle sprains. When ankle sprains are not properly treated, the incidence is 30% in the general population and more than 40% in athletes, especially for those engaged in soccer, basketball, track and field, and other long-distance mobilizations that place large loads on the ankle. Trauma is an important cause of soft tissue impingement of the ankle. It can be either the cause of or result from altered ankle biomechanics, and includes both bony and soft tissue impingement. Among them, soft tissue impingement was discovered only after arthroscopy was applied to the clinic. According to the anatomical site can be further divided into four categories: anterior external impingement, anterior impingement, anterior internal impingement, and posterior impingement. The main clinical features are pain, swelling of ankle after walking and limitation of activity, physical examination includes deep ankle pain (+), impingement test (+) and anterior and lateral impingement, anterior, anterior and posterior compression pain (+) of ankle joint.MRI is of great value in assisting the diagnosis. If the treatment is not proper it will bring disastrous consequences to the patient’s ankle joint. The current treatment generally requires surgery, and the gold standard method now is arthroscopic soft tissue cleaning and resection of the bony residue.
