A broken foot, medically known as “ankle sprain”, is a common occurrence in people’s lives. This trauma is an injury in which the muscles, ligaments and even the joint capsule around the joint are stretched and torn by an external force that causes the foot and ankle to exceed its maximum range of motion, resulting in pain, swelling and limping. Since the angle of normal ankle inversion is much larger than that of valgus, when a foot is broken, the foot is usually twisted inward and the injured part is the outer ankle. If you break your ankle frequently, most of them are due to improper treatment after the first break, causing ankle instability and frequent breakage. Most ankle sprains are inversion sprains, which can easily cause damage to the lateral ligaments of the ankle, especially the anterior talofibular ligament and the heel fibular ligament. After the first ankle sprain, many people’s viewpoint is that it’s “a piece of cake” and they should continue to live or exercise as usual the next day. Some people first rub the painful area after the first sprain, then wash the foot with hot water to activate the blood and reduce swelling, and finally walk and move around with pain, in order not to “store the tendons”. But practice has shown that this disposal of broken feet is not appropriate. Because the local small blood vessel rupture bleeding and exudate tissue fluid together will form a hematoma, generally after 24 hours or so to repair, stop bleeding and exudate. If the injury immediately after rubbing, hot compress wash hot, forced activity, will inevitably rub part of the blood stasis at the same time accelerate bleeding and exudate, and even aggravate the rupture of blood vessels, resulting in the formation of a larger hematoma, so that the injured parts swelling on swelling, pain on pain. People often say “stored tendons”, the actual injury after the soft tissue adhesions, affecting the functional activities. This situation usually occurs in the middle and late stages of the injury. Therefore, the limitation of activity within a few days after the injury is usually due to pain, not adhesions. What should I do after my first sprain? After the first ankle sprain, patients with mild pain should have their ankle protected with an elastic bandage or ankle brace for three weeks, and patients with severe pain should go to the hospital to receive external fixation in a cast for 3-6 weeks. The purpose of this treatment is to allow the injured ankle ligaments to heal and to prevent the ligaments from loosening in the future, which can lead to frequent broken feet like yours. For those who have habitual broken feet, special attention should be paid to the choice of shoes. If you wear high heels, after the heel is raised, the ankle point increases accordingly, the ligaments are relatively in a relaxed position, and the ankle joint stability is poor when walking, which is more likely to cause foot sprains. For some people with poor balance, walking often twisted to the foot, such people are best to wear high heels.
