A bunion, clinically known as a hallux valgus, is a skeletal deformity that occurs when the thumb of the first metatarsophalangeal joint deviates to the outside. If the patient has a more severe deviation of the bunion, painful as well as pathological changes, treatment means are needed to relieve it. There are non-surgical and surgical treatments to remove the bunion. I. Non-surgical treatment: Mild bunions can be treated conservatively by wearing loose fitting shoes to reduce local compression. It is also possible to insist on massage of the affected bunion joint and corrective movements under the guidance of a doctor. For example, patients can use bandages and rubber cords that are elastic, but do not hurt the skin, and apply them to the unilateral or bilateral bunions, and then do opposite traction movements to the left and right for relief. You can also wear bunion orthoses, bunion bunion sleeves, etc. When using orthopedic tools for correction, the strength and intensity should be adjusted regularly to gradually relieve the bunion, not to be too hasty, these methods do not work well or the bunion is more serious need surgery. Surgical treatment: 1. Soft tissue surgery: soft tissue can be cut to change the attachment points of muscles and relieve muscle pull to achieve corrective effects; 2. Osteotomy: bunion patients with bulging bones on the inside can undergo this surgery to remove part of the bone to loosen the contracted tissue and relieve the deformity at the same time; 3. Joint fusion: patients with joint degeneration can undergo fusion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint to correct the bunion deformity. If the patient has osteoarthritis, it can also be improved by joint fusion surgery.
