A hemoglobin concentration of 78 g/L is considered moderate anemia, and WHO diagnoses anemia based on the amount of hemoglobin in the body. Anemia is diagnosed when hemoglobin is <130g/L in adult males and <120g/L in adult females. Depending on the severity, anemia is classified as mild anemia, moderate anemia, severe anemia, and very severe anemia. Mild anemia has a hemoglobin >90g/L but below normal, moderate anemia has a hemoglobin between 60-89g/L, severe anemia has a hemoglobin between 30-59g/L, and very severe anemia has a hemoglobin <30g/L. Moderate anemia can present with a wide range of anemic symptoms, including pale skin and mucous membranes, dizziness, headache, ringing in the ears, and even fainting.
