How to choose lung cancer treatment?

The choice of treatment is mainly based on two aspects, namely early and late stage of the disease and the patient’s physical condition. There are three main traditional treatment methods for lung cancer, namely surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Surgery is suitable for patients with early stage of the disease (middle or early stage) and in good general health. If the tumor can be completely removed (or nearly completely removed) and the patient is physically able to tolerate surgery, surgery should be preferred because according to current data, the survival and quality of life of patients after surgery (especially early stage patients) are significantly higher than those who receive non-surgical treatment. Radiotherapy helps to control the tumor locally, and some patients can achieve cure or significant remission. Chemotherapy is effective in some patients (20-30%), but also has more toxic side effects and therefore has indications. Newer treatment modalities include interventional therapy (CT, ultrasound or under intraoperative guidance) with microwave, radiofrequency, argon helium knife, particle placement and so on. The indications are mainly for those who have limited tumor and whose age and physical condition are not suitable for surgery. Targeted drug therapy is an approach that has emerged in recent years. It can have miraculous effect on specific screened patients, but most of them are still ineffective and costly. There are also immunotherapy and Chinese medicine treatment, which can be tried, but they are only as complementary treatments. Lung cancer treatment is still a multidisciplinary and multi-method comprehensive treatment process, and there are many new research advances for each treatment method (whether surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, etc.), but the treatment effect is not yet satisfactory. Individualized treatment is also a future treatment trend. In short, the development of a scientific, rational and advanced treatment plan is the basis for successful treatment.
