Arthritis refers to inflammatory diseases that occur in the joints and surrounding tissues of the body and can be divided into dozens of types. There are more than 100 million people with arthritis in China, and the number is still increasing. The main clinical manifestations are pain, swelling, and dysfunction of the joints, as well as joint deformity, which in severe cases leads to joint disability and affects the quality of life of patients. Arthritis is one of the most common manifestations of rheumatic diseases, but arthritis does not necessarily mean rheumatic disease, and patients with rheumatic diseases do not necessarily have arthritis. The etiology, clinical manifestations, treatment and regression may also be different for different types of arthritis. The etiology of arthritis is complex and is mainly related to inflammation, autoimmune reaction, infection, metabolic disorders, trauma, and degenerative lesions. Common clinical arthritis includes the following: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gouty arthritis, reactive arthritis, infectious arthritis, traumatic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, enteropathic arthritis, and joint manifestations of other systemic diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus, tumors, and hematologic diseases. The most common is osteoarthritis. There are many treatment options for various types of arthritis, including physical therapy, medication, immunotherapy and biotherapy, surgery, and finally, artificial joint replacement. However, the results are not always as good as they should be. These are the views of modern medicine, but what is the understanding of traditional Chinese medicine? “Arthritis” is the name of a disease in Western medicine, which borrows the word “joint” from Chinese medicine and adds the word “inflammation”. This is because Western medicine considers all diseases to be inflammatory, such as gastritis, hepatitis, cholecystitis, nephritis, and so on. The term “joints” is found in the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, e.g. Su Wen (Su Wen) – Six Elements of the Great Discourse: “The joints are not conducive to flexion and extension.” In the Spiritual Pivot – Official Needle: “Those who suffer from edema and cannot pass through the joints”. However, traditional Chinese medicine uses the term “bone joints” to refer to joints. Arthritis, also known as joint disease and joint pain, belongs to the category of “paralysis” in traditional Chinese medicine, “Su Wen – Theory of Paralysis”: “Wind, cold and dampness are combined to form paralysis. The wind is a paralysis, the cold is a painful paralysis, and the damp is a paralysis.” It also involves “pain” and “impotence”. The clinical manifestations of joint disease are mainly pain, swelling and dysfunction of the joints. Why do joints hurt? Let’s look at the meaning of the Chinese word “pain” and analyze it in terms of character formation. “The word “pain” is the character for “winter” in the character for disease. According to Chinese medicine, it represents winter, cold, north, cold and water. Su Wen. Yin and Yang should be the great theory of the cloud “the north is cold, cold water, water salty, salty kidney, kidney bone marrow, marrow liver, the kidney is the main ear. It is cold in the sky, water in the earth, bone in the body, and kidney in the hide.” “Su Wen – Paralysis” said: “Pain is a lot of cold, there is cold, so pain. In “Su Wen – The Treatise on Pain”, there are fourteen examples of pain, thirteen of which are caused by cold, and only one is caused by heat. The word “pain” is a “yong” inside the character for disease, and “yong” refers to the ancient passage covered by walls on both sides, which is not normal and does not pass. According to Chinese medicine, “if it does not pass, it hurts”. Obviously, the cause of pain is related to cold, water and meridian blockage. Why does cold cause pain? The Su Wen – lifting pain theory cloud: “the meridians are more than popular, the circumference does not rest, cold into the meridians and late, weeping and not work, guest in the veins outside the blood is less, guest in the veins is not pass, so the pain.” The cold guest outside the pulse is less blood, so not glory is pain; cold guest in the pulse is not pass through the blood, so not pass is pain. This is the etiology and pathogenesis of why cold Qi causes pain.
