In general, wounds that do not heal for more than 3 weeks should be repaired with a skin graft, not only to repair the wound but also to avoid and mitigate severe hyperplastic scarring of such deep wounds in the future. If conservative treatment is continued, eventually it is expected to barely heal, but that would take a long time and a lot of unnecessary pain, would mean severe proliferative scarring, and would prevent the anti-scarring treatment that should be done early. It is recommended that the wound be surgically repaired as soon as possible, followed by a combination of anti-scar therapy and, if necessary, later plastic surgery to correct the deformity and improve the appearance.
