Traumatic stress disorder, which should be referred to as post-traumatic stress disorder, can be treated by medication and psychotherapy.
1. Medication: mainly antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Selective 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake inhibitor antidepressants have good efficacy and safety, mild adverse effects, and are recommended as the first choice of medication, of which fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline possess more clinical evidence. The new anti-anxiety drugs buspirone and tandospirone are better for relieving anxiety symptoms.
2. Psychotherapy: Encourage patients to face events, express catharsis and learn new ways of coping. Commonly used psychotherapy methods include cognitive behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization reprocessing and group psychotherapy.
Patients suffering from PTSD should actively contact a psychiatrist for early intervention and treatment with professional help, which is important for prognosis.
