The treatment of retroperitoneal fibrosis is mainly the early use of glucocorticoids, which can usually be effective within a few weeks, and may even cause the fibrotic mass to shrink or disappear. For example, for mild to moderate urinary tract lesions, elderly and frail patients or patients with systemic diseases, it is more appropriate to use prednisone drugs. They can also be used for preoperative preparation or postoperative prevention of recurrence. Initially, 30-100 mg of prednisone or prednisolone per day can be used. After stabilization, the dose is gradually reduced to the lowest effective maintenance level for at least 3 months. Azathioprine can also be used in combination with some efficacy. When the fibrosis present is large, the effect of hormonal therapy is limited, and surgical excision is required at this time.
