Multiple organizations call for an end to obesity stigma: People are too misinformed about obesity

On March 4, a statement signed by more than 100 institutions, organizations, societies and journals was published in Nature Medicine, the nation’s top academic journal, calling for a fresh look at obesity, an end to its stigmatization and the elimination of prejudice against weight. Obesity is not just laziness Obesity has always been perceived by most people as something that can be controlled through their own behavior, and as long as they eat less and move more, their weight will come down, causing those who are overweight or obese to be labeled as “lazy,” “gluttonous,” “undisciplined” and other stereotypes, and discriminated against in many things, causing harm to their bodies and minds. In fact, scientists have long confirmed that obesity in addition to diet, exercise, in addition to genetics, routine, living environment, age, psychological pressure and work environment and many other things can cause obesity. For example, there is a kind of obesity is called work fat, because of work, these people need to spend a lot of time on the work, irregular diet, lack of exercise time, but also to bear a very high work pressure, so slowly began to gain weight. And these people who work hard to gain weight are often labeled as “lazy” and “undisciplined”, which is very unfair. It is these discrimination exists, overweight or obese people are often subjected to greater heart pressure, a series of negative emotions, and these negative emotions will further aggravate their obesity by affecting metabolism and diet, and even some people will also develop into autism, eating disorders and other more serious psychological problems. Control mouth, open legs and can not solve the problem Until now, the vast majority of people still think that even if the reasons for becoming fat have a lot, but as long as they can consciously eat less and move more weight can come down, so no matter what kind of obese people, most of the weight loss advice given to them are diet meals, fitness, exercise and so on, but the fact is that very few people can successfully slim down in this way, especially those who are heavily obese There is also the possibility of serious physical damage. In the face of obesity, we can not generalize, we need to use weight loss methods according to the actual situation, and not just rely on those methods we think are useful. As early as 1997, the World Health Organization has announced that obesity is a chronic disease, and this disease will also cause a variety of complications such as type 2 diabetes, is currently one of the 10 major chronic diseases, the need for symptomatic treatment. Now those diet control, exercise and other weight loss methods for low weight people have some use, but for those who are heavily obese, these weight loss methods have little effect, and even the risk of causing weight gain. For such patients, it is necessary to improve the structure of the gastrointestinal tract physiologically through weight loss metabolic surgery, together with good living and eating habits and perfect post-operative management, so as to control the weight well in the long term. Over the years, the obese population has not only climbed, but we still maintain an inherent prejudice against obesity, unable to understand it with a rational mind, which is very unfavorable to control obesity. Only by truly understanding obesity and learning to face it correctly can we get rid of it.
