Palatal tensor relaxation is mainly used in the surgical treatment of cleft palate. 1. The palatofacial tensor starts from the base of the inner pterygoid plate and the vicinity of the pharyngeal cartilage, and ends at the palatine tendon membrane and the lower posterior part of the transverse ridge of the palatine bone plane; the palatofacial tensor is a thin, triangular-shaped muscle, with the base of the triangle located at the base of the skull, and the tip is located in the pterygoid hook; its main function is to contract in order to tighten soft palate tissues and to draw the pharyngeal tube outward and downward in order to enlarge the eustachian tube. 2. Cleft palate repair surgery must relax the soft palate tissue to achieve the purpose of prolonging the closed cleft; therefore, it is necessary to use a peeler or a bone chisel to break the winged hooks, so that the palatine sail tensor muscle loses its original tension, and both sides of the soft palate tissue can be loosened for subsequent cleft palate surgery for closure and repair. The palatal tensor relaxation should be performed by a specialized physician.
