Acupuncture + Rehabilitation for Stroke

Stroke is a common and frequent disease in neurology and rehabilitation departments. With the advent of aging society, stroke presents a clear “three highs” phenomenon (i.e., high morbidity, high disability and high mortality), which brings enormous pressure and economic burden to individuals, families and society. According to statistics, more than 3 million people suffer from stroke each year in China, and more than 1.7 million of them die as a result, and both figures are increasing year by year. Among the surviving patients, about 60~80% will have different degrees of disability. In the author’s opinion, in order to minimize the mortality and disability rate and improve the quality of survival of the patients, the rehabilitation treatment of traditional medicine, such as acupuncture, massage, rehabilitation training and Chinese herbal medicine, should be intervened as early as possible while sending the patients to the hospital for rescue treatment, which will significantly improve the function of limbs and speech of more than 90% of the patients, and effectively shorten the treatment time and reduce the treatment cost. It is worth mentioning that, according to relevant studies, Chinese medicine has a unique role and efficacy in the rehabilitation treatment of stroke, especially acupuncture and tui-na treatment. It is observed that after the doctor applies specific stimulation techniques to the acupuncture points of the liver, kidney and Yangming meridians through silver needles, it can effectively promote the metabolism and repair of brain tissue, improve the physiological function of the brain and the nutrition of the local tissue cells of the limbs, and receive the function of waking up the brain, nourishing the liver and kidney, dredging the meridians and activating blood flow. Auntie Fan, 72 years old, from Shengze, Jiangsu Province, was sent to our acupuncture and rehabilitation department by her family in November 2010 for “sudden onset of unfavorable movement of the right limb for 2 days”, and was treated with “scalp acupuncture + brain-opening acupuncture” for 2 times. In the patient’s own words, “I feel stronger than the good half of my body”. Another aunt Zhou, who also came from Shengze, was referred to our department by Wujiang Hospital for rehabilitation treatment due to cerebral infarction, and after half a month, the cranial CT showed no significant abnormality. The patient and his family were so happy that the infarct foci were eliminated, and they felt that the motherland medicine was really incredible. The massage therapy, through pushing, holding, pressing, rubbing and other techniques, plays the role of unblocking the meridians and channels, opening the joints, strengthening the muscles and bones, restoring the function and improving the blood circulation of the limbs, thus promoting the functional recovery of the affected limbs. At the same time, under the guidance of the theory of ancestral medicine, the department also uses Chinese medicine for the acute, recovery and post-stroke periods of stroke patients in phases, such as internal and external fumigation, according to the principle of discriminatory treatment. In addition, according to the three-stage rehabilitation program of standardized stroke treatment, we also provide rehabilitation treatment including physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise therapy, speech therapy, and psychotherapy in stages, and implement targeted and specialized training and guidance for patients. The above methods, combining Chinese and Western medicine, can not only effectively improve the patient’s daily living ability, but also enhance the efficacy, reduce the disability rate, shorten the patient’s recovery time and reduce medical costs. The author reminds that stroke patients must grasp the timing of rehabilitation treatment, the best treatment period within 3 months, and early intervention of acupuncture + rehabilitation treatment. Usually, patients with cerebral infarction who have stable vital signs can undergo the above-mentioned rehabilitation treatment about 3 days after the disease, while the intervention time for patients with cerebral hemorrhage can be delayed a bit later, for example, after 2 weeks. Only by seizing the golden time of rehabilitation treatment can we receive twice the result with half the effort. The Department of Acupuncture and Rehabilitation of Jiaxing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, relying on the strong advantages of the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, the key construction discipline of traditional Chinese medicine in the province, insists on the road of “highlighting the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine and giving equal importance to the treatment of Chinese and Western medicine”, using acupuncture and moxibustion, massage and other Chinese medicine means, and combining with modern rehabilitation medicine, brings new hope for the effective rehabilitation of stroke patients.
