Abstract: Vasodilatory rhinitis is common in young adults, and can be induced by sudden temperature changes, odor or dust mite stimulation. In this case, a 27-year-old young male came to our hospital with nasal congestion, runny nose and sneezing for half a month, and the effect of self-medication was not good. After treatment with saline rinse and nasal spray, the symptoms were relieved and the patient gradually recovered.
Basic information】Male, 27 years old
Disease Type】Vasodilatory rhinitis
Hospital】Northern War Zone General Hospital
Date of consultation】November 2021
Treatment plan】Saline rinsing of nasal cavity + medication (budesonide nasal spray + azelastine hydrochloride nasal spray)
Treatment Period】About half a month
Effectiveness】Significant improvement of nasal congestion, runny nose and sneezing
I. Initial consultation
The patient, a 27-year-old male, had symptoms of nasal congestion, runny nose and sneezing half a month ago due to the sudden cooling of the weather. The patient thought he had a cold and applied anti-cold medicine and antibiotics on his own for one week, but his clinical symptoms still did not improve, affecting his sleep at night and his daily work by blowing his nose constantly during the day, so he came to our hospital.
II. Treatment history
Nasal endoscopy showed that the patient’s nasal mucosa was slightly congested, bilateral turbinates were slightly enlarged, and the nasal septum was not significantly deviated. The patient was given medication and appropriate psychological comfort. The patient was advised to use saline to rinse and clean the nasal cavity, followed by local intranasal spray of budesonide nasal spray and nasal spray of azelastine hydrochloride, which was administered regularly for half a month to observe the efficacy. The patient accepted this treatment plan.
III. Treatment effect
The combination of budesonide nasal spray and azelastine hydrochloride nasal spray helped to relieve nasal mucosal congestion and control the discomfort caused by rhinitis. The patient’s nasal mucous membrane congestion improved after half a month of medication, and the patient indicated that the symptoms of nasal congestion, sneezing and runny nose had been basically controlled, and her nighttime sleep was well restored.
IV. Notes
We are glad that the patient’s condition has improved, but the patient is still advised to pay attention to the protection of nasal mucosa in daily life and to wear a mask when going out, especially in spring when there are many willow flakes, to prevent the recurrence of rhinitis. Also avoid blowing your nose hard to avoid stimulating the nasal mucosa; at the same time, pay attention to proper exercise, ensure balanced nutrition, avoid overworking, and develop a good state of mind to help your condition recover.
V. Personal insight
In daily life, when symptoms such as repeated sneezing, runny nose and nasal congestion occur, attention should be paid to distinguish them from cold symptoms and be alert to vasodilatory rhinitis, and if necessary, go to the hospital in time to avoid blind medication and delay the condition. Vasodilatory rhinitis is a relatively common disease in ENT clinics, and can be actively treated with medication after diagnosis and observed for changes in the condition. The causative factors of this disease have certain psycho-psychological factors, so patients must ensure a positive state of mind and avoid anxiety and depression in their working life.
