How soon can I eat after gastroscopy

After gastroscopy, if there are no adverse reactions and no complications during the operation, you can usually eat some water and liquid food in about 2 hours. How soon you can eat after gastroscopy depends first on whether the gastroscopy has caused damage to the stomach and also on whether there is a temporary water fasting related disease in the stomach. If the clinical gastroscopy does not reveal any diseases requiring water fasting and does not cause complications, you can eat only when the swallowing function of the throat is restored. This is because local anesthetic medication is applied prior to gastroscopy to reduce irritation to the throat and digestive tract, making it easy for the patient to cooperate in completing the gastroscopy. The local anesthetic may affect the patient’s swallowing function to a certain extent, and it usually takes about half an hour to an hour to recover, so in principle, it is possible to eat in more than 1 hour, but for clinical safety reasons, it is still recommended to eat liquid food in about 2 hours. Some patients with serious underlying gastric diseases, such as gastrointestinal bleeding induced during gastroscopy, may have to delay the time of eating, and the specific needs to be determined by the doctor.
