Ectopic pregnancy, also known as ectopic pregnancy, is a pregnancy in which the embryo is implanted in a place other than the uterine cavity. The most common ectopic pregnancies are tubal pregnancies, but there are also abdominal pregnancies, splenic pregnancies and uterine horn pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancy is a very dangerous disease in obstetrics and gynecology, once the blood vessels in the pregnancy site rupture and bleed, it will lead to hemorrhagic shock and endanger the patient’s life. You may wonder, when we do IVF, we put the embryo into the uterine cavity properly under ultrasound monitoring, does it mean that ectopic pregnancy will not happen? The answer is no, ectopic pregnancy can occur in IVF, why is that? First of all, the embryo is not honest in the uterine cavity, it will wander around freely, on the one hand, in search of fertile soil, on the other hand, it is induced by the uterine cavity or the fallopian tube some chemical factors, which has not been studied yet. Therefore, it is not possible to predict in advance where the embryo will eventually settle down, and even if it is placed in the uterine cavity, the risk of ectopic pregnancy cannot be avoided. Second, tubal infertility is an important factor in the high incidence of ectopic pregnancy. If there is inflammation in the fallopian tubes that causes obstruction or adhesions around the tubes, the inflammatory factor can induce the embryo to wander and attract it toward the inflamed area. Sometimes the embryo travels to the fallopian tube just at the stage of blastocyst implantation and unfortunately resides in the fallopian tube, creating an ectopic pregnancy. Sometimes it even travels from the fallopian tube to the abdominal cavity and takes root to form an abdominal pregnancy, but of course none of these pregnancies can be sustained. Therefore, after the embryo transfer, you should monitor the changes in blood HCG levels on time, and in the event of abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding symptoms, consult the doctor in time to rule out the case of ectopic pregnancy. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, surgical treatment will be performed in a timely manner. Tubes with lesions can also be ligated or removed in advance of IVF treatment to prevent ectopic pregnancy.
