Bupleurum can evacuate and reduce fever, relieve liver and depression, and elevate yang qi. It is used in treating colds and fever, cold and heat (the body is hot and cold at the same time), distension and pain in the chest and ribs, irregular menstruation, uterine prolapse, and prolapse of the anus.
Scutellaria baicalensis can clear heat and dry dampness, expel fire and detoxify toxins, stop bleeding, and tranquilize the fetus. It is used in treating dampness-warmth, summer-dampness, chest tightness and vomiting, damp-heat lumps and fullness, diarrhea, jaundice, lung-heat cough, high fever and thirst, blood-heat epistaxis, carbuncle, swollen sores and poison, and restlessness of the fetus.
Semixia can dry dampness and dissolve phlegm (expelling dampness by drying dampness and dissolving phlegm), subduing rebelliousness and stopping vomiting, eliminating lumps and dispersing knots. It is used in treating damp phlegm and cold phlegm, coughing and wheezing with excessive phlegm, phlegm-drinking palpitations (dizziness and palpitations caused by phlegm-drinking evils), wind-phlegm dizziness, vomiting and regurgitation, chest and epigastric constipation, prunus qi (similar to pharyngeal allergy); and in the external treatment of carbuncle, swelling and phlegm-nuclei (subcutaneous swellings such as nuclei of the nodules).
Codonopsis can strengthen the spleen, benefit the lungs, nourish blood and promote the production of body fluid. It is used in treating deficiency of spleen and lung qi, poor appetite and tiredness, cough and asthma, deficiency of qi and blood, yellowish color, palpitation and shortness of breath, thirst due to injury of fluid, and thirst due to internal heat (fever accompanied by symptoms such as excessive eating, drinking and urination).
