The advantages of percutaneous tracheotomy are that it is rapid, effective, and cost effective compared to the conventional method of tracheotomy in the operating room. Relative contraindications include young age (less than 16 years), inability to reach normal laryngeal cartilage and cricoid cartilage, thyroid hypertrophy, and calcification of the tracheal rings; percutaneous tracheotomy is absolutely contraindicated when emergency tracheal intubation or tracheotomy is required. Percutaneous tracheotomy is more suitable for internal medicine systems such as internal medicine, emergency departments and ICU wards. Percutaneous tracheotomy is only one of the four methods of tracheotomy (tracheotomy; percutaneous tracheotomy; cricothyrotomy; minimally invasive tracheotomy); each of the four methods of tracheotomy has its own advantages and disadvantages, and there is no question of replacing or not replacing them. In general, tracheotomies in the surgical system of general hospitals are mostly performed by the otolaryngologists, while in the medical system, they are mostly performed by the otolaryngologists. It is a great thing for the otolaryngologists if the doctors in the medical department can master percutaneous tracheotomy.
