When is the best time to operate for strabismus combined with amblyopia or hyperopia?

The general principle of when to operate on a child with strabismus combined with amblyopia is to treat the amblyopia first and then the strabismus. If strabismus surgery is performed before the amblyopia is cured, the strabismus surgery will not be very effective in the future and the child’s eye position will not be easily consolidated. For children with strabismus combined with hyperopia, the main thing is to check whether the child has amblyopia. As long as there is no amblyopia, hyperopia is not an important factor in whether to operate for strabismus. Many parents ask, “Must the amblyopia be completely cured before surgery? The answer is yes. If amblyopia is not cured and strabismus surgery is done in a hurry, strabismus can easily recur. If amblyopia is not cured for a long time, will the timing of strabismus surgery be delayed? This is also a definite answer. Because strabismus combined with amblyopia should be treated first, and strabismus surgery should be done as early as possible after the amblyopia is cured to give both eyes a chance to establish the development of binocular monovision as early as possible. If the treatment of amblyopia takes too long, then the timing of strabismus surgery is definitely delayed.
