How to choose fruits for diabetics

Fruit is rich in vitamins and minerals, which play an important role in human metabolism, and once you have diabetes, many people are afraid to eat fruit. In fact, most people with diabetes can consume fruit in moderation, and it is generally recommended that people with high or fluctuating blood sugar suspend fruit intake. Why suspend fruit intake? Is it because fruit is high in sugar? Or is it because it raises blood sugar quickly? How to evaluate the effect of different fruits on blood sugar? The sugar content of fruits does not fully represent the rate of glycemic rise. Glucose has a glycemic index of 100, while fructose’s is only 23, but fructose is much sweeter than glucose. In other words, some fruits are very sweet to eat, but the rate of glucose is not necessarily very fast, such as pear; some fruits have low sugar content, but the rate of glucose may be very fast, such as watermelon; there are still fruits that may not be sweet to eat, but the sugar content is not low, such as dragon fruit contains 70-80% of the sugar for glucose, although it is not sweet to eat, but not low sugar content, which is an important reason why diabetic patients do not recommend a large number of intake of dragon fruit. Therefore, diabetic patients need to consider two aspects of the choice of fruit sugar content and glycemic rate, that is, the glycemic load (<10: little impact on blood glucose; 10 ~ 20: general impact on blood glucose; >20 has a greater impact on blood glucose). At present, there is no authority in China to release more comprehensive data on glycemic load of food. Diabetic patients are recommended to choose fruits with lower sugar content and low glycemic index, 150-200 grams per day can be used, usually as an additional meal. The speed of eating fruit must be appropriately slowed down, so as not to elevate postprandial blood glucose. If you eat too much fruit, you need to appropriately reduce the intake of staple food, so as not to exceed the total calorie intake.
