Beware! Insomnia is a sign of other diseases

Common insomnia triggers or diseases that co-occur with insomnia symptoms are divided into three main categories: The first category is somatic discomfort mainly includes pain-related diseases, cardiopulmonary diseases, thyroid diseases, neurological diseases, skin diseases and so on. Sometimes the symptoms of the disease itself, such as chronic pain, itching, coughing at night, convulsions, etc., affect the patient’s sleep; or some patients take drugs for treating the disease and experience side effects such as insomnia. Therefore, when patients visit the doctor, they should try to fully inform the doctor of their physical condition to facilitate the doctor to develop a more effective treatment plan. The second category is psychological disorders mainly include emotional disorders and anxiety disorders. It is often difficult for ordinary people to catch the signs of mental illnesses, and even if they do detect them, they do not think they need treatment or are ashamed to communicate with others. Insomnia, as a common symptom of mental illness, is often detected early by patients. If patients can get professional assessment from doctors at this time, they can detect mental illnesses early and get proper treatment. The third category is other sleep disorders mainly including sleep apnea syndrome, restless legs syndrome, circadian rhythm disorder and so on. At present, the professional knowledge of sleep medicine is not popular enough, and these disorders are often ignored by patients and even doctors. When evaluating insomnia, doctors should assess in detail whether the patient has symptoms of other sleep disorders, and if they find that the patient’s sleep disorder is difficult to deal with, they can refer the patient to a sleep specialist, which will be more conducive to the patient’s full recovery.
