What does urobilinogen (+-) mean?

Urobilinogen (+)(-) means that there is a small amount of urobilinogen in the urine, which is bound bilirubin excreted through the common bile duct into the intestine, where it is converted into urobilinogen. Here the urobilinogen is reabsorbed into the blood, which is transported to the kidneys and then excreted in the urine. Normally, there is a small amount of urobilinogen in the urine, which will show a weak positive result in a routine urine test, i.e. (+)(-) as mentioned above. However, if the patient is suffering from bile duct stones or pancreatic head cancer, which leads to impaired excretion of bilirubin, the urinary urobilinogen may be reduced or even disappear. If the patient has a hemolytic disease or hepatitis, this can lead to an increase in urobilinogen. All of these conditions are pathological, and the underlying cause needs to be clarified and treated, otherwise the disease will develop further and the damage to the body is greater.
