The common management of mitral valve insufficiency is as follows: 1. In the acute phase, we should promptly reduce pulmonary venous pressure and increase cardiac output. We can administer sodium nitroprusside to reduce the anterior and posterior cardiac load by dilating the small arteries to reduce the symptoms of pulmonary stasis, and also reduce regurgitation and increase cardiac output. We can administer diuretics to reduce blood volume and decrease preload. For chronic cases, prevention of infective endocarditis is also needed.2. For asymptomatic cases, no special treatment is usually needed and can be reviewed regularly. In patients with heart failure, sodium intake should be limited, and a combination of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, digitalis, and diuretics can be used. 3. For some patients with severe symptoms but milder complications, surgical procedures can be considered, and commonly used procedures are valve repair surgery or prosthetic valve replacement surgery.
